Sara Van Hamme, Self Portrait

Sara Van Hamme has illustrated children's literature and visual composition for more than a decade. In her career, she's developed dynamic works in watercolour, chalk, mixed media, printmaking and photography. The artists' work, "Caution: Do Not Open Until Puberty! An Introduction to Sexuality for Young Adults with Disabilities," a manual written by Rick Enright, has been published through the Thames Valley Children's Centre (TVCC). The manual is currently being reprinted by the TVCC in Ontario, and translated to French working with the Spina Bifida Association in Quebec. Van Hamme's current projects include printmaking and an illustrated book on ants. Her audience spans infant to adolescent readers.

Van Hamme earned her BA in Art from the University of Western Ontario with a concentration in Visual Arts, Studio. She further specialized her skills with studies in Children's Book Illustration at the Ontario College of Art and Design, and Cultural Anthropology from McMaster University. Her First Native of Canada, cultural anthropology and visual art studies blend and shape the artists' culturally diverse vision, manifesting within anthropomorphic art.

Van Hamme's unique style flourishes the childhood imagination, communicating not only the obvious message, but also toward metaphorical and culturally meaningful interpretation. Exhibition venues include The John Labatts Visual Arts Centre, University of Western Ontario, Lynwood Arts Centre and S/P Prints's Spring Show: "In Celebration of the Inquisitive Mind".

Van Hamme is a Canadian Society of Children's Authors, Illustrators and Performers (CANSCAIP) Friend, Rentor at Toronto Open Studio, a member of Gallery 44 and member of the former Port Rowan Public Library Board.
